Which silver coin has the lowest premium?

Among sovereign coins, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Britannia typically carry the lowest premiums — around 10–12% over spot for a single coin in Europe — followed by the Maple Leaf. The Perth Mint Kangaroo, the mint's high-mintage stacking coin, is often cheaper still at a few dollars over spot. The American Silver Eagle is usually the most expensive.

Is the Silver Kookaburra a good coin for stacking?

No. It is a collector series with an annually changing design and capped mintage, and it carries a premium of roughly 20% or more over spot — about double a Philharmonic. That premium is only recovered on resale to a collector. For silver by weight from the same mint, buy the Kangaroo instead.

Why does premium matter more for silver than gold?

Because it is a much larger share of the price. At $64 an ounce, a 10% premium is $6.40 and a 22% premium is $14 — money the metal must earn back before you break even. On a $4,330 gold ounce the same percentages are proportionally the same but the choice between coins differs by a point or two; on silver it can differ by ten.

What are milk spots on silver coins?

White blemishes that appear on some 999 and 9999 silver coins over time, caused by residue from the minting process. They do not affect metal content but do affect resale to collectors. Silver coins are where premium matters most, because the premium is a much larger share of a $64 ounce than of a $4,330 one. On a 1 oz silver coin, the difference between a good choice and a poor one can be 10 percentage points of premium — money the metal has to earn back before you are level. This guide compares the major sovereign silver coins on the number that decides it.

The short answer

For the lowest premium on a recognised sovereign coin, the Vienna Philharmonic or the Britannia. For the highest resale liquidity in the US, the Silver Eagle — but you pay for it. For volume stacking at the lowest cost per ounce, the Perth Mint Kangaroo. Avoid the Kookaburra as a stacking coin; it is a collector series with a collector premium.

*Typical single-coin dealer premiums in 2026; a Philharmonic at €6.80 over a €58 spot was 11.7% at one European dealer, a Kookaburra €12.80 at 22%. Premiums move with physical demand — in spike windows they can run two to three times normal — and orders of a tube or more usually earn 1–3% less.

The premium problem, stated plainly

At the silver price on our live feed as this was written — $64.04 per troy ounce — a 1 oz coin's metal content is about $64. A 10% premium is $6.40; a 22% premium is $14. The Kookaburra buyer needs silver to rise 22% just to sell at the price paid; the Philharmonic buyer needs 12%. Same ounce.

Against that, coins recover a higher share of their premium on resale than bars or rounds do — a Britannia sells as a Britannia, not as generic silver. That is the trade: coins cost more to enter and give more back on exit.

9999 fine, radial-line security engraving, enormous mintage and global liquidity. The one well-known weakness is milk spots — white blemishes that appear on some coins over time from the minting process. They do not affect metal content but do affect resale to collectors. The Royal Canadian Mint's MINTSHIELD coating, applied since 2018, reduces the problem.

Kangaroo (Perth Mint)

Perth's high-mintage stacking coin, 9999 fine, typically $2–4 over spot. If you are buying silver by the tube for the metal alone, this is usually the cheapest sovereign coin on the market.

American Silver Eagle
