Kilo Silver Coins: Kookaburra, Koala, Kangaroo and Britannia — Premium, VAT, and Coin vs Bar at 1 kg

4 min read

A kilo silver coin is a strange and useful object: 32.15 troy ounces of silver, legal tender, struck by a sovereign mint, in a single piece the size of a saucer. It carries a fraction of the per-ounce premium of a 1 oz coin, keeps the recognition and resale advantages that bars lack, and — for European buyers — brings the same VAT question as every other silver product. This is the practical guide.

What a kilo coin actually is

1 kg = 32.1507 troy ounces of 999 or 9999 fine silver, with a nominal face value, issued by a government mint. At the silver price on our live feed as this was written — $64.04 per troy ounce — the metal content is about $2,060. The 10 kg versions, where they exist, are ten times that and correspondingly rare.

Where kilo coins sit on premium

Below 1 oz coins, above kilo bars. A 1 oz sovereign silver coin typically carries 10–20% over spot; a kilo bar from an accredited refiner runs low single digits; a kilo coin sits between, usually closer to the bar. The reason is the same as for gold: fabrication and handling are per-piece costs, and a kilo coin spreads them across 32 ounces.

The exception is the annually-redesigned series — Kookaburra, Koala, Lunar — which carry a collector premium on top. The Kangaroo and Britannia kilos, with unchanging designs, are the ones to buy for metal.

For someone buying a few kilos, the coin's small extra premium buys meaningfully easier resale. For someone buying twenty kilos, the bar's saving compounds. Refiner detail in silver bars and refiners compared.

The VAT issue — read this if you are in Europe

Investment gold is VAT-exempt across the UK and EU. Silver is not. A UK or EU buyer pays VAT at the standard rate on a kilo silver coin unless the dealer sells it under a margin scheme, where VAT is charged only on the dealer's margin. On a $2,000 object that is a material difference, and it has nothing to do with which coin you pick. Full explanation in why silver costs more in Europe than gold.

Handling and storage

  • Keep it in the capsule. Kilo coins ship in a protective capsule. Fingerprints on 9999 silver tarnish, and a handled coin loses its collector premium if it had one.
  • Milk spots — white blemishes from the minting process — appear on some silver coins over time. They do not affect metal content but do affect collector resale. Perth Mint coins are less prone than some others.
  • Weight. A kilo coin is heavy and awkward. Ten of them is 10 kg in a form that does not stack. Plan storage accordingly; see what storage actually costs.
  • Delivery. Insured, signature required, plain packaging. A kilo coin in a branded box is a robbery target. See who pays if a delivery goes wrong.

Who kilo coins suit

  • Buyers who want silver in size but still want coins — legal tender, recognition, easier resale — without paying 1 oz premiums.
  • UK residents, for whom the kilo Britannia is exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
  • Collectors of the annual series, who accept the premium for the design.

They suit less well anyone who wants to sell in small increments — a kilo is a kilo — or who is buying silver purely as metal in volume, where bars are cheaper.
