1 Kilo Gold Bar Guide 2026: Price, Brands & Whether It's Worth It

6 min read

A one-kilogram gold bar is the cheapest way to own gold, and the most awkward. It's the format that gets you closest to spot price — and the one that gives you the least room to change your mind. If you're deploying six figures into metal, it's almost certainly the right answer. If you're not, it almost certainly isn't. Here's the honest guide for 2026.

What a kilo bar actually is

One kilogram of gold is 32.1507 troy ounces — usually rounded to 32.15. Most modern kilo bars are .9999 fine, though the LBMA minimum for investment bars is .995.

There's no single standard shape. Cast kilo bars are chunky and slightly irregular, roughly 80 × 40 × 18 mm. Flatter minted versions run closer to 115 × 52 × 9 mm. Either way the thing that surprises everyone is the size: a kilo bar has roughly the footprint of a phone, weighs about the same as a bag of sugar, and sits comfortably in one palm.

Cast vs minted

Cast bars are poured molten into a mould. Rough edges, individual character, cheapest to produce, lowest premium. Minted bars are cut and stamped from rolled sheet — sharp edges, mirror finish, usually sealed in a tamper-evident assay card. Identical gold; the difference is finish and packaging. Cast wins on cost, minted wins on frictionless resale.

The premium: why kilo is the cheapest gold you can buy

Refining, stamping, packaging and handling costs are largely fixed per bar, not per ounce. Spread those across 32 ounces instead of one and the per-ounce cost collapses. Rough 2026 ranges:

FormatTypical premium over spot
1 kilo bar (LBMA-accredited refiner)~1.5–3%
1 oz minted bar~3–8%
1 oz sovereign coin~3–8%
Fractional coins & small bars~8–20%+

What that means in money: deploy $200,000 as 1 oz bars at a 5% premium and you pay about $210,000. The same $200,000 in kilo bars at 2% costs about $204,000. That's roughly $6,000 more actual gold for the same outlay — the entire argument for the format in one line.

At 2026 gold prices of roughly $4,050–$4,250 an ounce, a kilo bar's melt value sits somewhere around $130,000–$137,000. Check the live spot price before you commit; that number moves daily.

The brands, honestly compared

RefinerFormatWhere it sits
Umicore (Belgium)CastUsually the cheapest or near it
Metalor (Switzerland)CastConsistently among the lowest premiums
Valcambi (Switzerland)Cast & mintedGreen assay card, very widely recognised
Argor-Heraeus (Switzerland)Cast & mintedExcellent recognition, mid premium
Royal Canadian Mint (Canada)Cast & mintedSovereign-mint backing, strong in North America
PAMP Suisse (Switzerland)MintedMost recognised globally; ~0.5–1% dearer

Here's the part most guides overcomplicate: at kilo size, accreditation matters far more than brand. The premium gaps between accredited refiners are small, and every one of these sells readily worldwide. Buy from a refiner on the LBMA Good Delivery List and keep the bar sealed — that's 95% of the decision. Our refiner comparison goes deeper on the individual houses.

One correction worth knowing

You'll see kilo bars advertised as "LBMA Good Delivery." They aren't. Good Delivery is a specification for large wholesale bars of 350–430 troy ounces — the ~400 oz bars that settle trades in London. A kilo bar is made by an LBMA-accredited refiner, which is a meaningful and checkable thing, but it is not itself a Good Delivery bar. We explain the distinction properly in what LBMA Good Delivery actually means. If a dealer's copy gets this wrong, it tells you something about the rest of their copy.

The downsides nobody puts in the product description

  • Zero divisibility. You cannot sell part of a kilo bar. Need $20,000? You're liquidating the whole ~$130,000 position at whatever the price is that day. This is the single biggest drawback and it catches people out.
  • A thinner buyer pool. At six figures per unit you're mostly selling back to dealers, who set the spread. A Krugerrand has a global retail market; a kilo bar doesn't.
  • Never break the seal. Bars sold "in assay" come in tamper-evident packaging with the assay card — that's your chain of custody. Break it or lose the card and you've removed third-party verification, which slows resale and can trigger a dealer assay test.
  • Concentration. One bar is one point of failure: one vault, one safe, one shipment. That shapes how you insure and store it.
  • Counterfeit targeting. Bigger bars are a more attractive fake, which is exactly why dealers scrutinise unsealed ones harder. See how to verify a gold bar.

Tax

  • VAT: a .9999 kilo bar is investment gold — VAT-free in the UK and EU.
  • UK Capital Gains Tax: kilo bars are not exempt. Only UK legal-tender coins (Britannias, Sovereigns) escape CGT.

That trade-off deserves real thought if you're a UK taxpayer. The 2–4 percentage points a kilo bar saves on premium can be wiped out many times over by a CGT bill on a large gain. Model both before you buy. This is general information, not tax advice.

So should you buy one?

Yes, if you're deploying $130,000+ in one go, you intend to hold long-term without partial sales, you're optimising purely for cost per ounce, and the bar will live sealed in allocated storage.

No, if your total gold allocation is under about $150,000 (a kilo would be your entire position), you might need to sell in stages, you're a UK taxpayer optimising for CGT, or you want to gift, barter or sell privately. In those cases coins or smaller bars are the better tool.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 1kg gold bar worth?

Around $130,000–$137,000 at 2026 gold prices of roughly $4,050–$4,250 per ounce, since a kilo contains 32.15 troy ounces. Expect to pay about 1.5–3% above that melt value when buying. The figure moves with spot daily.

How big is a 1 kilo gold bar?

Smaller than most people expect — roughly the footprint of a phone but far thicker and denser. Cast bars run about 80 × 40 × 18 mm, flatter minted bars around 115 × 52 × 9 mm. It fits in your palm and weighs about the same as a bag of sugar.

Are kilo gold bars a good investment?

They are the cheapest way to buy gold per ounce, which makes them efficient for large allocations. The trade-off is zero divisibility — you cannot sell part of one. Good for six-figure long-term holdings, poor as a first or only gold purchase.

Which brand of gold bar is best?

For recognition and resale, PAMP Suisse and Valcambi lead. For lowest cost, Umicore and Metalor. Royal Canadian Mint and Argor-Heraeus sit in between. At kilo size the premium gaps are small, so the real rule is to buy from an LBMA-accredited refiner and keep the bar sealed.

Can you sell part of a kilo gold bar?

No. It is a single indivisible unit — you sell the whole bar or nothing. Cutting it destroys the assay seal and serial verification, leaving you selling scrap gold at a much wider spread. If you may need to liquidate in stages, buy coins or smaller bars.

Is a kilo gold bar LBMA Good Delivery?

No. Good Delivery is a specification for large wholesale bars of 350–430 troy ounces. A kilo bar is produced by an LBMA-accredited refiner, which is meaningful and checkable, but it is not itself a Good Delivery bar.

What is the difference between cast and minted gold bars?

Cast bars are poured into a mould — rougher finish, individual character, lower premium. Minted bars are stamped from rolled sheet — precise edges, mirror surface, usually sealed in a tamper-evident assay card at a slightly higher price. Both hold identical gold.
