Gold Bar Refiners Compared 2026: PAMP, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, Metalor and the Rest

6 min read

Once you get past one ounce, the question stops being “which coin” and becomes “whose bar”. A kilo of gold from PAMP, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, Metalor, Heraeus or C. Hafner contains exactly the same metal — 32.1507 troy ounces of it, at 999.9 fineness. What differs is the packaging, the resale friction, and about one to two percent of premium.

This is the gold companion to our silver bar refiners comparison, and it is deliberately practical: which brands hold value, what cast versus minted actually costs you, and when a kilo bar is the wrong purchase entirely.

The short answer

For resale, any LBMA Good Delivery accredited refiner is fine — PAMP, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, Metalor, Heraeus and C. Hafner are all on the list and all trade readily. Brand matters far less than accreditation, condition and the assay certificate.

The LBMA Good Delivery List is the accreditation that matters. A refiner on it has been assessed on assay accuracy, financial standing and production standards. Dealers worldwide will buy an accredited bar without a re-assay. A bar from an unlisted refiner may still be pure gold, but you will pay for testing on the way out, and some dealers will simply decline it.

The refiners, briefly

The Swiss four

Switzerland refines a very large share of the world's gold, and four names dominate — all four are in or near Ticino, in the Italian-speaking south.

  • PAMP (Castel San Pietro) — the most recognised retail brand globally, largely on the strength of the Lady Fortuna design. PAMP's minted bars ship in sealed assay cards and the company uses a surface-fingerprinting authentication system called Veriscan. You typically pay a small brand premium and get it back on resale.
  • Valcambi (Balerna) — one of the largest refiners in the world by capacity, and the inventor of the CombiBar, a bar scored into detachable 1 g sections. Valcambi cast kilo bars are a common choice for people optimising purely for low premium.
  • Argor-Heraeus (Mendrisio) — historically strong in Europe, known for the Kinebar holographic security feature on some minted products. Solid, unglamorous, widely accepted.
  • Metalor (Neuchâtel) — long-established, very strong in the professional and industrial market. Slightly lower retail brand recognition than PAMP, which sometimes means a marginally better entry price for identical metal.

The German and Benelux refiners

  • Heraeus (Hanau, Germany) — a large industrial precious metals group. Bars are plain, well-made and priced sensibly.
  • C. Hafner (Pforzheim, Germany) — smaller, highly regarded, and notable for refining largely from recycled feedstock. Popular with buyers who care about provenance.
  • Umicore (Belgium) — another industrial group with a strong European following and typically keen pricing.

Mint-issued bars

The Royal Canadian Mint and Perth Mint both produce gold bars alongside their better-known coins. These carry a sovereign mint's name rather than a refiner's, which some buyers prefer, and both are Good Delivery accredited.

Cast versus minted: where the premium goes

Cast bars are poured into a mould and cost less. Minted bars are stamped from rolled sheet, look sharper, come sealed in assay cards, and cost more per ounce.

CastMinted
ProductionMolten gold poured into a mouldBlanks cut from rolled sheet, then struck
AppearanceRounded, slightly irregular, individualUniform, sharp edges, mirror or matte finish
PackagingOften loose, with a paper certificateSealed assay card with matching serial
Premium over spotLowest availableTypically a little higher
Best forMaximum metal per dollarGifting, presentation, easy verification

The honest guidance: if you are buying a kilo to hold, buy cast. The extra spent on a minted kilo buys presentation, and presentation does not compound. The exception is if you expect to sell to a private buyer rather than a dealer, where a sealed assay card does real work in establishing trust.

Why kilo bars are the cheapest gold you can buy

Premium is largely a fabrication cost, and fabrication cost is per-piece, not per-ounce. Spreading it across 32.15 ounces instead of one is why kilo bars carry the lowest markup of any common format.

Making a 1 oz coin and making a 1 kg bar involve broadly comparable amounts of handling, packaging, security and paperwork. One of them then divides that cost by 32. This is the entire reason large bars are cheap on a per-ounce basis, and it is why premium falls steadily as you move up: 1 oz coin, to 1 oz bar, to 100 g, to 10 oz, to 1 kg.

At the gold price on our live feed as this was written — $4,395.30 per troy ounce — a kilo bar's metal content alone is roughly $141,300. On a purchase that size, one percentage point of premium is about $1,400. That is what makes format selection worth ten minutes of thought at this level, and it is why we price from live spot rather than a padded fixed rate.

When a kilo bar is the wrong choice

Low premium is not the only thing that matters, and there is a real argument against kilo bars that dealers rarely make.

  • You cannot sell part of it. A kilo bar is one indivisible six-figure decision. If you need to raise a fraction of that, you sell the whole thing and rebuy — paying a spread twice. Thirty-two 1 oz coins cost more up front and give you thirty-two exit points.
  • The buyer pool is smaller. Far more people can write a cheque for one Britannia than for a kilo bar. That shows up as a slightly wider bid-ask spread when you sell.
  • Storage becomes non-optional. A single unit of this value in a domestic property is an insurance conversation, not a drawer. See home safe vs bank vs vault.

A reasonable rule of thumb: kilo bars for the core holding you do not expect to touch, 1 oz coins for the portion you might actually need to liquidate in pieces.

What to check before you buy

  1. Refiner is on the LBMA Good Delivery List. All the names above are.
  2. Serial number matches the certificate. On minted bars in assay cards, the number on the bar and the number on the card must agree. A mismatch is a stop sign.
  3. The assay card is intact. Once a sealed card is opened, the bar generally needs re-verification on resale, which costs you. If you buy sealed, keep it sealed.
  4. Fineness is 999.9. Standard for modern investment kilo bars.
  5. Weight is right. A kilo bar is 1,000 g, or 32.1507 troy ounces. Bars sold as “32 oz” are a different, lighter product.
  6. Condition is described honestly. Secondary-market bars trade at a discount to new-with-assay and that is fine — but it should be stated, not discovered.

Buying kilo bars with crypto

We hold kilo gold bars from PAMP, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, C. Hafner, Umicore and the Royal Canadian Mint, in both new-with-assay and secondary-market condition, alongside Metalor products in other formats. Everything is priced from live spot at the moment you check out, so the number you agree is the number struck against the metal price then — not a stale figure from this morning.

Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, USDC, Monero, Solana and roughly thirty other coins are accepted, and orders ship insured and discreetly packaged. Volume pricing improves at five and ten units. If you are selling rather than buying, we also buy gold back for crypto.

One note on VAT

Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK and across the EU, which is a meaningful structural advantage over silver and platinum — both of which attract VAT in most European jurisdictions. On a kilo of gold, that exemption is worth more than every premium difference discussed above combined. It is the single largest reason European buyers concentrate in gold rather than white metals.
