The Krugerrand was the world’s first one-ounce gold bullion coin, launched by the South African Mint in 1967 at the request of the Chamber of Mines. It became the model for every modern sovereign bullion program. The 22-karat alloy (91.67 percent gold, 8.33 percent copper) gives the coin its distinctive orange-yellow color and exceptional striking durability — each Krugerrand contains exactly one full troy ounce of pure gold; the alloy adds copper for hardness without diluting metal content. The 1999 issue is current-issue mint state production.
