The Krugerrand was the world’s first one-ounce gold bullion coin, launched by the South African Mint in 1967 at the request of the Chamber of Mines. The 22-karat alloy (91.67 percent gold, 8.33 percent copper) gives the coin its distinctive orange-yellow color and exceptional striking durability — each Krugerrand contains exactly one full troy ounce of pure gold; the alloy adds copper for hardness without diluting metal content.
