The Mexican Libertad is the flagship bullion program of the Casa de Moneda de México, struck continuously in silver since 1982 and in gold since 1981. The 2022 issue carries the standard designs unchanged from program inception: the Angel of Independence (the Winged Victory monument on Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma) on the reverse, and the Mexican National Coat of Arms (an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, holding a serpent) on the obverse. Libertads are valued purely by metal weight and carry no face value, distinguishing them from the American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, and Austrian Philharmonic.

About the Casa de Moneda de México

The Casa de Moneda de México was founded in 1535 by Antonio de Mendoza, the first viceroy of New Spain, making it the oldest continuously operating mint in the Americas — pre-dating every other Western Hemisphere mint by over 200 years. The mint operates under direct authority of the Banco de México and produces all Mexican coinage including bullion programs.
